Tourist attractions

Chicago has some of the best museums and art galleries in the world, housing world-class collections. On your trip to Chicago, head straight for Museum Campus, where you’ll find three of the best: Adler Planetarium, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Shedd Aquarium. The nearby Museum of Science and Industry is also great fun as well as educational. Don’t miss the Art Institute of Chicago either, with its unrivalled Impressionism collections.

Trips to Chicago should also take in Trump Tower and the Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower, which was once the tallest building in the world.

Leisure activities

There are plenty of other attractions here, and any trip to Chicago should also include a visit to Chinatown, one of the city’s most colourful and dynamic neighbourhoods. The Shedd Aquarium on Museum Campus is especially good for family visits with its great array of aquatic life and interactive exhibits.

For an evening at the theatre try Jefferson Park’s Gateway Theatre, or Steppenwolf in Lincoln Park. Most prestige theatres are located in the Loop area. The different areas of Chicago have festivals throughout the year, so you’ll never be short on excitement and spectacle.

Chicago is also home to some of the world’s most popular sports teams.  In the summer, enjoy a baseball game at Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs or U.S. Cellular Field to see the White Sox. In the winter, the United Center is home to the Chicago Bulls NBA basketball team and the Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. During the fall, take in an American Football game at Soldier Field to see the Bears.

Eating in Chicago

Chicago is one of North America’s great restaurant cities. Different neighbourhoods specialise in different cuisine, such as Greek, Indian and Chinese. Areas such as Albany Park and Lincoln Square are best for German, Middle East and Korean food, and Wicker Park is famous for its award-winning dining venues.

On no account must you miss an authentic Chicago deep-dish pizza, a major contribution to global gastronomy! It comes with a wide choice of toppings.

If you’re still hungry, enjoy a world-famous Chicago-style hot dog or an Italian beef sandwich!

Shopping in Chicago

If you’re travelling to Chicago primarily for shopping, you’ll not be disappointed. You can find just about anything here, and the most famous street for all manner of shopping is the aptly named ‘Magnificent Mile’. Here you’ll find boutiques, multi-story malls and premier department stores, all in the Near North area of the city.

There are cutting-edge shops in and around Wicker Park and Bucktown, whilst for designer home goods it’s recommended you head for River North’s Gallery District. This is the biggest arts and design area outside of Manhattan.

Cultural considerations

The USA is generally very big on etiquette and visitors may not always be aware of this. Tipping for example is expected in restaurants – around 20% is the norm. Americans also don’t like talking about money, especially the cost of high-end items, and it’s considered rude to ask how much something costs. Loud usage of mobile phones in public spaces is also considered rude, and a firm handshake is the preferred mode of introduction.

Travel requirements

Qatar Airways flights to Chicago arrive at O’Hare International Airport and there are regular taxis and buses into the city. If you are taking public transportation, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) subway will take you straight to downtown Chicago.

Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. So before you fly to Chicago please check the visa and passport requirements.
